PRESS RELEASE

City of Cumberland to Receive ISA Gold Leaf Award

The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (MAC-ISA) will present the City of Cumberland, Maryland with its Gold Leaf Award for Outstanding Landscape Beautification Activities at its annual meeting at the Rocky Gap Resort on October 2nd

In order to ensure public safety as well as tree appearance and health, the City of Cumberland maintains a proactive program of identifying and responding to tree problems.   The City proactively prunes trees to ensure public safety and identifies trees that are candidates for pruning either by noting the problem in day to day operations or when a complaint is raised by a local resident.  During the initial visit to assess the tree care needs, neighboring trees are also assessed for their tree care needs.  When the City is notified of tree problems, an attempt is made to quickly respond to the request, using either City staff or a private contractor.  In addition, the City of Cumberland has a volunteer Tree Commission that makes tree planting recommendations (both species and locations) that the City implements.  Because of its proactive tree management and tree planting programs, Cumberland has been a Tree City USA since 1997.  “MAC-ISA would like to recognize this proactive approach to municipal tree management in Western Maryland and encourage other communities in the region to follow their

example,” said Bonnie Deahl, MAC-ISA President.

The International Society of Arboriculture is a professional organization whose worldwide membership of 25,000-plus includes municipal, commercial, utility and consulting arborists as well as academic researchers in the arboriculture field.
