To the Editor:

With the dawning of May comes planning for the annual Cumberland Day of Caring and Sharing, set this year in the city of Cumberland for May 18.

As I renew the Mayor’s Challenge for all Cumberland citizens to give at least 25 hours of service to beautification projects in the city over the next four months, I encourage everybody to join in the efforts of the Day of Caring and Sharing to beautify our city.

Annually, hundreds of volunteers have joined this effort and I hope that we can boost those numbers this year and complete even more projects than ever before. Once again, the County United Way is organizing the effort and everybody is encouraged to participate.

I call upon city businesses to again make the commitment to a more beautiful Cumberland by committing employees to participate in this effort for a few hours. Businesses, organizations, families, and individuals are all welcome.

Please plan to get your hands dirty cleaning up Cumberland on May 18, and call the United Way office today at 301-722-2700 to sign up.

We all have a responsibility to do what we can to make Cumberland a more beautiful place to live, work, and do business. Your few hours of support for the Day of Caring and Sharing will go a long way to achieving this challenge.

Many thanks in advance for the dedicated hands of United Way volunteers and staff, Let’s Beautify Cumberland volunteers, city of Cumberland staff, Columbia Gas of Maryland, and CSX, for making this annual event a successful reality!
