CUMBERLAND — City leaders have been “fantastically happy” with the the job performance of acting city administrator Jeff Rhodes over the last six months, Mayor Brian Grim said Tuesday night.

So the city has decided give him the job permanently.

Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to hire Rhodes as city administrator effective Jan. 1, with automatic annual contract renewals through June 30, 2015, unless terms are renegotiated.

Employed by the city for the last 13 years, Rhodes was appointed acting city administrator last summer, after longtime administrator Jeff Repp resigned. A search committee was assembled, and the city received applications, but never formally listed the job.

“When we met with the search committee it was very obvious to us that the work that you’ve done, as well as the financial savings to the city, will certainly be a great benefit to us,” Grim said. “We’re looking forward to the next couple of years working with you.”

Councilman David Kauffman said he appreciates Rhodes’ willingness to oversee efforts to reorganize the city’s internal operations.

“It gives us an opportunity to ... really redefine what our structure is so we can deliver as efficiently as possible our services,” Kauffman said.

Rhodes worked as director of administrative services before taking the acting city administrator position. Previously, he has served as city administrator in Frostburg, as well as Keyser and Grafton, W.Va.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve the mayor and council,” Rhodes said. “I appreciate your confidence.”

Repp, a native of South Dakota, served as city administrator for 17 years before resigning in June, saying he wanted to be closer to his Midwestern roots. Repp is currently one of three finalists for a city manager job in Carbondale, Ill.
