CUMBERLAND — A Historic National Road Bicentennial Grand Feature Parade will be held May 7 at 1 p.m. in downtown Cumberland.

The Allegany County Department of Tourism is organizing the parade as part of a statewide Maryland Historic National Road Bicentennial Celebration. The idea was inspired, in part, by Cumberland’s history of elaborate community parades in the early 20th century, including a major parade on the Baltimore Street portion of the National Road in 1912.

“The community is planning a number of events for this commemoration,” explained County Tourism Director Barb Buehl.  “Organizing a parade in the spirit of the grand events Cumberland held a century ago is an idea that we think would add to the festive nature of the day.”

The 2011 Bicentennial Parade will be open to drill teams, marching bands, drum and bugle corps, pipe and drum bands, stationary music units on vehicles and youth groups. Floats, motor corps and car club units are also being recruited.

Judging by category will be held and prizes will be awarded.  The float theme for the parade will be “200 Years of History Along Maryland’s National Road.”  A team of professional parade judges will be located at various locations along the parade route. Final parade route planning is under way in coordination with the Cumberland Police Department and will be announced when finalized.

Forms and rules to enter the parade can be downloaded on-line at http://www.mdmountainside.com/static.php?page=262.

Parade-related activities include a contest sponsored by the Cumberland Times-News to select a mother in Allegany County who best reflects the virtues of the National Road’s well-known Madonna of the Trail. Details will be announced at a later date. MDmountainside.com and the Mountain Maryland Facebook page will feature National Road Discovery promotions in conjunction with the celebration.
